*Are we getting closer to allogenic "off the shelf" PRP??*
A recent study published 4/2/24 looked at allogenic PRP versus placebo in a level 1 trial with about 40 patients in each group. The groups were followed for a year.
One person gave 350 cc of blood and they used the Regenlab system which is a single spin 5 min protocol with a known low platelet recovery % and known to produce lower platelet doses from a lower blood volume input. For unknown reasons, and despite spending a lot of effort quantifying the proteins in the allograft PRP, the authors did not calculate the platelet doses and did not provide platelet counts in the allogenic PRP.
The results? The authors concluded that allogenic PRP was superior to placebo ONLY for symptoms at the 3 month mark only....all other functional outcomes and outcomes at other time intervals shown no difference between placebo and allogenic PRP.
So, we don't know the platelet doses but we can infer from the blood volume (350ml) divided amongst 40 patients that the platelet doses were really low from this allogenic PRP made from 10cc of blood run thru the Regenlabs kit.
This might have worked if they were microneedling fine lines in the face but was probably a hypothesis dead on arrival for knee osteoarthritis.
We should repeat this study idea with PRP stats and allogenic platelet doses in the 5 billion to 10 Billion range!!
