RE: Zimmer Subchondroplasty
I recently received a “Cease and Desist” letter from the attorneys for Zimmer because I used the term “subchondroplasty” in a lecture presentation and on Dallas PRP and Stem Cell’s web site . Zimmer has a trademark on the term “subchondroplasty” which they market as a specific procedure where bone cement is put into a bone lesion…it is not a regenerative medicine procedure and obviously a non-anatomic procedure.
I want to be very clear…..I am injecting bone marrow concentrate into a bone marrow lesion in a subchondral location. We are all born with bone marrow in our bones so this solution seems natural, right?
I have linked to a study published this year with 60 knees and using the same technique…with 12 year followup! https://lnkd.in/eQDRGvJ
Biologic subchondral procedures were being done long before Zimmer trademarked “Subchondroplasty” in 2012 and then again in 2017.
My patients like the concept of putting bone marrow and stem cells and growth factors back where they belong….into the bone…instead of just filling a void with cement. Much wiser to use a regenerative therapy in my opinion.
So, to be clear, I don’t work for Zimmer and I am not a consultant for Zimmer and never would be.
I absolutely do not do a calcium phosphate (cement) subchondroplasty because I get better results with a procedure based on normal human anatomy and biology
I have removed all references to subchondroplasty to my knowledge because I don’t want people thinking that I am using or promoting that Zimmer technique or product, ever.
